A monograph for rice blast fungus and allies is being built--https://magnaporthales.sebs.rutgers.edu/
This
e-monograph website of Magnaporthales (https://magnaporthales.sebs.rutgers.edu/) is created and released via
Rutgers University. Currently there are three families (Magnaporthaceae,
Pyriculariaceae, and Ophioceraceae) in Magnaporthales. All accepted
species names are included under each family. On the basis of literature
and specimen examination, species description, diagnostic illustration,
type designation, host range, geographical distribution, and literature
are provided for representative taxa, especially the type species for
each genus. Genbank sequence accession numbers of eight genes including
ITS, 18S, 28S, ACT, CAL, MCM7, RPB1, and TEF1
also are provided in the e-monograph. Genomic sequences of 24
representative taxa are hyperlinked to the genome databases in FunGI and
the Broad Institute. Four dichotomous keys to three families and 32
genera, and keys to species of three genera are provided. The
Magnaporthales e-monograph provides free access on updated taxonomic,
biogeography and molecular data to researchers and the broader user
communities worldwide, and aims to facilitate the future work on
systematics, biodiversity, evolution, genetics, plant protection and

approaches to understanding the evolution of Magnaporthales *
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to a symposium convened by Drs. Ning
Zhang and Debashish Bhattacharya entitled “Comparative genomic approaches to
understanding the evolution of Magnaporthales” that is supported by the
National science Foundation, Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological
Sciences, and the Rutgers Center for Turfgrass Science. Magnaporthales is a fungal order that
includes the rice blast fungus (important plant pathogen and model system for
plant-fungal interaction study), summer patch pathogen of turfgrass, take-all
pathogen of cereals, as well as saprotrophs. The speakers will talk about their
recent progress on the comparative genomics, population genomics,
phylogenetics, effector genes, horizontal gene transfer studies etc. We plan to
hold the meeting at the Rutgers University Inn on January 7th, 2016.

Workshop Jan 6 - 8th 2016 - “Comparative genomic approaches to understanding the evolution of Magnaporthales”
Drs. Ning Zhang and Debashish Bhattacharya will host a workshop at Rutgers University,
January 6 – 8, 2016 entitled
“Comparative genomic approaches to understanding the evolution of Magnaporthales”
Supported by the National Science Foundation and Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, this workshop will focus on improving the annotation of draft genomes of 5 fungal species in the order Magnaporthales (the rice stem rot fungus Nakataea oryzae = Magnaporthe salvinii; grass root-infecting Magnaporthiopsis rhizophila and Magnaporthiopsis incrustans; and saprotrophic, aquatic Ophioceras dolichostomum and Pseudohalonectria lignicola) coupled with a comparative analysis with the rice blast fungus and other pathogens in Magnaporthales. In addition, we sequenced the transcriptomes of 21 taxa in the Magnaporthales (details in Luo et al. 2015. SCIENTIFIC REPORTS | 5 : 9448 | DOI: 10.1038/srep09448).
The main goals of the workshop are to understand the evolution of pathogenicity, life style adaptation, and the evolution and putative functions of membrane associated proteins and transporters etc. This working group has the potential to make substantial discoveries using a genome wide approach. The event will include BLAST and KEGG analysis to improve the gene models and to provide putative annotations for genes encoded in currently un-characterized regions of the genome, analysis of the functional categories listed above, short talks (15-20 min. each), and a final day to summarize and set future actions and timelines. We envision at least one major manuscript will be generated from the effort with all participants as co-authors, and concepts for other manuscripts and databases to be developed and shared during the workshop.

We all agree that widely used names should not be changed before careful evaluation and thorough discussion, and that is why we are here discussing this issue in the past several months.
The reason that Magnaporthe is not the right generic name for the rice blast fungus is not because of the new nomenclature, but because recent analysis based on DNA sequences, morphological, and ecological characters all indicate that the rice blast fungus is different from the true Magnaporthe--the rice stem rot fungus (M. salvinii). Unless we conserve Magnaporthe for the rice blast fungus, a name change is needed.

Rice Blast Fungus Name -- Magnaporthe or Pyricularia? (31 March 2013)
The asexual genus name Pyricularia has been used for the rice blast
fungus since 1892. Based on
morphological similarity, the sexual state of the rice blast fungus was
believed to belong to Magnaporthe,
and was named as Magnaporthe oryzae
in 2002. However, recent
phylogenetic analyses from different labs all demonstrated that the rice blast
fungus does not belong to Magnaporthe. Therefore, a name change is
needed. The new fungal nomenclature
requires One Name for One Fungus, and the asexual state names are now treated
equally as the sexual state names.
As the oldest and legitimate generic name for the rice blast fungus, Pyricularia has the priority. However, because this fungus is a
widely used model system and has large impacts, researchers from all over the
world have been discussing this name issue since April 2012 in the CBS One
Fungus, Which Name symposium at Amsterdam. The most recent discuss was at the Asilomar Fungal Genetics
Conference in March 2013. A

The type species of Magnaporthe
is Magnaporthe salvinii (rice stem
rot), which is not congeneric with Magnaporthe
(Pyricularia) oryzae or grisea, based
on phylogenetic analysis, morphology, and ecological characters (for details,
see Zhang et al. Mycologia. 2011 103(6):1267-76. doi: 10.3852/11-022). Therefore, a change of genus name is
needed. If we follow the new
nomenclature (Melbourne Code), which considers names for sexual and asexual
morphs equally, the name for the rice blast fungus should be Pyricularia oryzae, while the name for
the stem rot is Nakataea oryzae,
because these are the older generic names. Another option is to write a proposal to conserve the genus Magnaporthe for the blast fungus.

One reason for voting now is that naming new taxa in this fungal group (and epitypifications etc.) cannot be done without a settlement for the rice blast. Certain research and publications will be held up without knowing which name is accepted. Another reason is that recent discussions on Magnaporthe/Pyricularia names started April 2012 during the CBS Amsterdam One Fungus Which Name symposium. In the past 7 months, there have been 1,059 pageviews to the Magnaporthe blogger from 10 countries (ranked from most frequent: United States, Japan, France, Russia, India, Germany, Spain, China, Sweden, and South Korea), plus numerous email correspondence among this email group.
However, as you pointed out, a much broader community has not been reached. I agree that the vote will be extended until after the March 2013 Fungal genetics meeting. But I still suggest we forward the message through our networks as early as we can. I will send you the poll results next week, although it is not final, for your reference. I temporarily set the new deadline to March 30, 2013.

Introduction
Magnaporthe or Pyricularia? (by Ning Zhang, 2

At
the 2011 Melbourne International Botanical Congress, One Scientific Name for One Fungus was voted for. According to the new Article 59, all
legitimate fungal names are now treated equally
for the purposes of establishing priority,
regardless of the life history state of the type (The Melbourne Code should be
out in the summer of 2012).
The
end of dual nomenclature for fungi will have major impact on pleomorphic
species. For Magnaporthaceae, an
important question that has to be addressed is which genus name should be used for the
rice blast fungus. The rice blast fungus has Magnaporthe sexual state (teleomorph)
and Pyricularia asexual state
(anamorph).
At the Amsterdam CBS “One
Fungus, Which Name” symposium, the Sordariomycetes Taxonomy Discussion Group
agreed that the following criteria should be considered when choosing between
two generic name options:

Monophyly,
phylogeny
·
Names in use in
plant pathology, industry, etc.
·
Quarantine
issues;
·
What morphology
is most commonly encountered;
·
Stability;
·
Taxonomic
clarity; genus name should be well defined;
·
Number of needed
combinations/name changes
etc, etc.
A recently published 6-gene
phylogeny (see figure attached) with selected taxa in the Magnaporthaceae
indicates that
the current concept of both Magnaporthe and Gaeumannomyces are
polyphyletic. Magnaporthe salvinii is the type species of Magnaporthe.
Pyricularia grisea and P. oryzae are older names than M.
grisea and M. oryzae (please see the list for details on date and
type information). However, to
minimize the name change for important pathogens and quarantine issues, we
should consider conserving the Magnaporthe genus name for the rice blast
fungus (Magnaporthe oryzae).
An option is to segregate Magnaporthe from Pyricularia and limit the usage of Magnaporthe only for the clade including M. oryzae and M. grisea.
Alternatively, we will keep Magnaporthe for M. salvinii and use Pyricularia
as the genus name for the rice blast fungus.
